В деревнях на Новый год молодежь ходит по домам и поет веселые песни-щедровки. В щедровках прославляют начало нового года, а также желают семье счастья, здоровья и богатства:

In the countryside, young people wander from house to house and sing merry songs – shchedrovki (Christmas carols). Those shchedrovki glorify the oncoming New Year and wish happiness, health, and wealth to family:
Shchedrovka (shchedrivka) is a ritual song. The word “shchedrivka” has originated from the name of the holiday “Shchedriy vecher (Lavish night)” preceding the New Year. On the Shchedriy vecher night young people visit the households, sing shchedrivki that congratulate and glorify both the family and its master and mistress with their children, wish happiness, health and well-being in the New Year.
Kolyada, kolyadka is a merry ritual song. The word “kolyadka” has originated from the ancient Roman name of the new year – “Calendae”.
In Ukrainian tradition, on the first day of the New Year the boys and lads used to make the round of the households, sang kolyadki, wished people good luck, health, prosperity, and profuse harvest in the New Year.
